When drug addiction and mental health problems, collide it may take unique solutions to solve the problem. Co-occurring conditions are actually very common in the United States. If you are among the many Americans who face a dual diagnosis, then using psychodrama techniques is useful to aid in the healing process. Attending psychodrama therapy in Kemah TX is a first step in the journey to a whole new experience.
What is Psychodrama?
Psychodrama is a form of psychotherapy. Originally started in 1921 by Jacob Moreno, a psychiatrist, this form of psychotherapy seeks to get to the core of mental health problems through group participation and role-playing. Psychodrama is an experiential form of therapy that incorporates all the participants into acting out problems with which its members face. Moreno refers to this therapy as the “scientific exploration of truth through dramatic method.”
By going through the motions or recreating a “scene” that troubles you, you have the opportunity (with the group’s help) to make better choices. In addition, the person who is seeking help may learn new strategies for dealing with old conflicts by practicing them in a safe, group setting.
What are Psychodrama Therapy Techniques?
Participating in a psychodrama session requires more than just acting out the problems in your life with others. Generally, these sessions will require 8-12 participants and last between 90 minutes and 2 hours. A trained therapist experienced in group therapy techniques needs to guide the session using proven psychodrama techniques. Four such techniques are used in the procedure:
Role Reversal: The protagonist acts as someone important in his or her life in an effort to gain an outside perspective as well as gain deeper empathy.
Mirroring: During this procedure, the protagonist is an observer, watching others reenact the troubling scenario.
Doubling: Someone in the group acts out the behavior of the protagonist by modeling his or her actions, emotions, and so forth. This allows the protagonist to view himself or herself from another person’s viewpoint.
Soliloquy: This process involves the protagonist speaking to the others as an audience about his or her inner feelings and thoughts.
The techniques of psychodrama are quite effective in bringing to light hidden emotions. It also helps you understand yourself and others better by seeing things from multiple viewpoints. The role-playing is also therapeutic.
