Relapse Prevention Strategies in Houston

As the saying goes, no one ever said getting sober is easy. But rehab sets you up for success if you learn the essential skills and prepare for the challenges ahead. Your learning takes place during relapse prevention therapy and other types of individual, group and family therapy. You use your new skills every day in recovery. The plan is that these skills transfer to real life when you complete rehab.

Using Relapse Prevention Therapy

As statistics show, many people go back to their drugs or alcohol after rehab. But with the right relapse prevention therapy (RPT), you can maintain sobriety. In fact, relapse prevention therapy is your best offense and defense against triggers and temptations. You just need to remember what you learn and practice it every day.

RPT is a type of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). This therapy helps you understand, predict and manage the threats to your sobriety. For more than 40 years, people seeking long-term recovery have used these methods to their benefit. Different types of RPT exist, according to professionals who developed their own methods and practices.

The Importance of Having a Relapse Prevention Plan

According to experts in the field of addiction treatment, time is a significant factor in your confidence toward remaining sober. The longer you stay sober, the more confidently you avoid relapse. Over time you also grow smarter in dealing with threats to your recovery.

But at some point in your recovery, you face high-risk situations. During these high-risk situations, you start feeling vulnerable. Your fears chip away at your confidence and strength, making you more likely to relapse.

Your highest risks for relapse exist when you feel negatively emotional or pressured by others to use drugs or drink. Going through relationship problems also puts you at risk for relapse. All of these stresses and others like them make you struggle with your sobriety. They also prove the importance of using skills learned in RPT.

Learning Relapse Prevention Skills

At Kemah Palms Recovery® in Kemah, Texas, you learn essential skills in relapse prevention therapy. Those include coping skills training for dealing with life stress and the problems that led you to abuse substances in the past. They also include CBT interventions and lifestyle-behavioral changes.

Coping skills play the most significant part of your relapse prevention therapy. Using the skills you learn at Kemah Palms Recovery®, you can stay sober.

Professionals in the field of addiction treatment know relapse does not happen because of one problem. Instead, it comes from a series of events and issues. It’s when you let the issues add up and do not use your coping skills consistently that you lose your hold on recovery. You most likely experience many warning signs of relapse that you ignore or leave unmanaged, before using drugs or alcohol again.

Coping skills learned in RPT help you understand the process of relapse. These skills give you effective means of coping with your urges and recognizing when you experience high-risk situations. In therapy, you learn ways to deal with these situations.

In therapy, you learn healthy strategies for relapse prevention. You also learn how to get back to recovery if you slip into drinking or drugs again. Many coping skills relate to lifestyle changes and continued support in your home community.
